SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, which is an internet protocol designed to provide communication security via two main methods:
- Encrypting your data – which means that hackers cannot see what your browser sends to and receives from a web server.
- Authenticating your website – which means the SSL Certificate tells your browser “This website really is who it claims to be.” For example, when you visit PayPal.com, the SSL verifies the website you are at is actually PayPal, and not a hacker posing as PayPal.com.
- Google uses SSL as a ranking signal so this may even give you a small ranking boost.
HTTPS means “Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure”. Technically, it is not a protocol in and of itself; rather, it is the result of simply layering the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) on top of the SSL/TLS protocol, thus adding the security capabilities of SSL/TLS to standard HTTP communications. The main motivation for HTTPS is to prevent wiretapping and man-in-the-middle attacks.
